2009 WordCamp SF thoughts & impressions.

Overall, I thought WordCamp was a lot of fun, especially attending with Sarah and Carolyn. I am duly impressed with the people from Automattic, and of course, with Matt Mullenweg. Sounds like there’s a lot to look forward to with WordPress, as noted in his State of the Word talk. WordPress 2.8 should be out by the end start of the this summer and if they hold to their promise, upgrading should not be an ordeal.

There were several talks I wish I had attended, but will now have to see on WordPress.tv when it’s finally uploaded. In particular, I plan to check out that 4-hour work-week dude, Matt Cutts’ talk, and Steve Souders’ Even Faster WordPress themes. Yes, these were the talks that I missed… if only I could be in two places at once.

And lastly, WTF was that with Philip Greenspun?

Geeking out on WordPress. Excited about WordCamp.

What can I say? I’ve spent this entire weekend with WordPress, getting my new site up and resurrecting my blog content from a defunct WordPress install. So, the fact that WordCamp is coming up this weekend is quite appropriate.

I’m heading across the bridge to network, learn, and basically geek out on WordPress. I’ll be accompanied by a fellow WordPress geek, Sarah, who does amazing work using said awesome tool, and Carolyn, designer and project manager extraordinaire.

So if you haven’t already signed up for WordCamp, it’s too late! The registration is closed. Bummer.

I’m sure I’ll be blogging about it though, along with the other 706 attendees.

This week’s drawings

It’s been a busy week, with some of the activities resulting in excellent news regarding a new web design job!

In the meantime, here are some drawings I managed to do today: (yes, they are of our pets)

Amazingly enough, I find Sammy difficult to draw with a pencil. I think this is the most success I’ve had with capturing his personality using conte pencil. And of course, this would be his sleeping personality.

Like Sammy, I also find Phobos difficult to draw. Maybe it’s because he is mostly a black blob, thereby making it more difficult to understand the form beneath all the fur and darkness. Granted, Siwa is also a black blob, but because she is larger, it is easier to see her form and make decisions.

So there you have it. More drawings.

A design in progress & a ‘cupla drawrings

The itchy fingers are scratched but once again (!) I’ve managed to make myself more busy than I really wanted to…

I’m working on a personal web project that I’ve been wanting to do for a long time now. I’ve promised the Santa Fe Etching Club that I would make them a website all these years, and FINALLY, I’m getting to it. Here’s a sneak peek:

I have plenty to do still – like gathering images of etchings from the artists, and their bios, but heck, it’s a start! It’s also my first pure CSS liquid layout! (This means absolutely nothing to everyone but web designers.)

And, I started drawing again! Yay! Below are a couple (a quick gesture, and a more refined drawing of the same pose and model):

Comprehensive Online Portfolio

Among the many activities in my insanely busy life, I’ve been working as a contractor for an awesome gallery software company called Masterpiece Manager. If you’re an artist or gallery in need of inventory software, I highly recommend their product! Star’s website uses Masterpiece.

My latest project with Masterpiece has been a lot of fun and the client has been wonderful to work with. The products offered on her site are top of the line Judaic art and gifts. We went live yesterday, and the site can be seen on UrbanMensch.com.

Sculpture, freelance design, & grad school (oh my!)

It’s time for that monthly update to let you all know why I only post once a month (if I’m lucky).

Reason Number One:

I took a sculpture class this summer. Yes, on top of every other commitment I’ve made, I decided it was high time to use my hands instead of my computer. First thing I made was an elephant. Of course.

This was followed by the monk’s head, which evolved from the difficulty I was having in making decent eyes and eyeballs. I thought, why not solve that problem by closing them lids!

Reason Number Two:

In addition to working almost full-time at the University, I continue to remain busy as a contractor for Masterpiece Manager. I’ve been working on a wonderful project with an awesome client. Once that site is done, I shall plug that site continuously as it is truly a beautiful site. I also have another pending project that I hope to complete soon.

Reason Number Three:

I was busy applying to Cal State University East Bay’s Multimedia Program, to which I was accepted! So if I thought I was busy now. . . I am so excited to learn more and actually make websites come alive with audio, video, and cool things like interactivity. And I hope to expand my repertoire beyond websites. I’m so looking forward to it!

Reason Number Four:

(I just really wanted to put their pictures up.)

Jon and I are off to a long camping trip this week, then off to beautiful Lake Faucherie for my birthday!

What is Web 2.0 anyway?

I’ve been hearing this term Web 2.0, pop up so much in the last couple of years. When people ask me what exactly is Web 2.0, I don’t quite know how to respond. Probably because I don’t know the answer myslef. Recently I ran across a video on YouTube that explains it far better than anyone ever could.

Choosing a web host: customer service is key

It was a rough weekend, one that was spent working to try to get my site back up. As you can see, it is now up, but not without pain and suffering. Rather than detail what occurred in the past, I would rather move forward and pretend it never happened.

A new web host doesn’t hurt either. When looking for one, I chose the most important criteria to me: excellent customer service. I did the usual google search and in the process ran across several websites that gave Lunarpages excellent marks when it came to support.

So, after four days of banging my head against the wall with my previous host, here I am up and running with Lunarpages.

*Big sigh of relief*
